How to Make Sweet Heat BBQ Chicken Drumsticks
1) Season the Drumsticks
Pat chicken drumsticks completely dry with paper towels. Drizzle with olive oil and coat generously with Sweet Heat BBQ Rub, garlic powder, and smoked paprika on all sides — pressing the rub firmly into the skin. For best results let the seasoned drumsticks rest uncovered in the fridge for 1–2 hours or overnight to allow the rub to penetrate the meat deeply.
2) Bake the Drumsticks
Preheat oven to 400°F / 200°C. Place drumsticks on a wire rack over a lined baking sheet — the rack allows air to circulate around the drumsticks for even cooking and crispier skin. Bake for 35–40 minutes until the skin is starting to crisp and the internal temperature reaches 165°F / 74°C.
3) Make the Sweet Heat Glaze
While the drumsticks bake combine BBQ sauce, honey, Sweet Heat BBQ Rub, and hot sauce in a small bowl. Stir well until combined. This glaze takes the drumsticks from great to absolutely incredible — don't skip it.
4) Glaze and Finish
Remove drumsticks from the oven and brush generously with the sweet heat glaze. Return to the oven and bake for another 10–15 minutes until the glaze is caramelized, sticky, and slightly charred at the edges. For extra caramelization broil for the final 2–3 minutes — watch closely so they don't burn.
5) Rest and Serve
Let drumsticks rest for 5 minutes before serving to lock in the juices. Serve with coleslaw, cornbread, and extra sweet heat BBQ sauce on the side.
Other Cooking Methods
Grilled Sweet Heat Drumsticks
Grill over medium heat for 30–35 minutes turning every 5–7 minutes until cooked through. Brush with sweet heat glaze during the final 5 minutes for a beautiful caramelized finish.
Air Fryer Sweet Heat Drumsticks
Air fry at 400°F / 200°C for 22–25 minutes flipping halfway. Brush with sweet heat glaze after flipping and again right before serving.
Smoked Sweet Heat Drumsticks
Smoke at 250°F / 120°C for 2–2.5 hours until internal temperature reaches 175°F for fall-off-the-bone tender drumsticks. The smoke combined with the sweet heat rub creates an unbeatable depth of flavor.

Tips for Perfect BBQ Drumsticks
• Season the night before — overnight resting with the rub makes a massive difference in bark development and flavor depth.
- Use a wire rack — elevating the drumsticks allows air to circulate all around for even cooking and crispier skin.
- Don't rush the glaze — apply it in the final 10–15 minutes so it caramelizes without burning.
- Always rest before serving — 5 minutes minimum to keep all the juices inside.
- Broil at the end — 2–3 minutes under the broiler creates an incredible caramelized finish that takes these drumsticks to the next level.
Storage & Reheating
Leftover drumsticks keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a 350°F oven for 15–20 minutes covered with foil to keep them moist, then uncover for the final 5 minutes to re-crisp the skin. Avoid the microwave — it makes the skin soggy and rubbery.
